There are a lot of factors to paintballs breaking.
1. Weather conditions. The colder it is or the longer the paint has been exposed to the winter temps the higher the chances it will break in some of the 'harder hitters', ie Tippmans. You can't do much about this other than keep the supply in a warm car or indoors somewhere.
2. Bad/old paint can also give issues. All paint should be kept in sealed bags, with as much of the air taken away as possible. Moisture in the air causes paintballs to swell and also breaks down the outer shell. Huge variations of the temperature within the paintball environment will also damage the paintball shell. If you have paint left over at the end of play place it in zip-loc bags, press the air out, seal it and then store in a warm environment. 60f+. Dont leave it in a garage or the trunk of a car.

4. Nicks inside the barrel or on the front bolt.
5. Gun firing too fast, chopping/slicing balls, due to mis-sync with loader.
